The primary purpose of a clock is to display the time. The higher Q of resonators in electronic clocks makes them relatively insensitive to the disturbing effects of the drive power, so the driving oscillator circuit is a much less critical component.[2]
About 1581 Galileo noticed the characteristic timekeeping property of the pendulum. Huygens’s invention brought about a great increase in the importance and extent of clock making.
